Wondering how to do YouTube keyword research to find low competition keywords with high traffic? In this video marketing tutorial, you'll learn how to come up with video ideas, namely YouTube video ideas, using vidIQ, which is a free keyword research tool. So let's get right into this vidIQ tutorial and vidIQ review on how to do keyword research for SEO.
One of my favorite places to do YouTube keyword research to find low competition keywords with high traffic and to come up with YouTube video ideas is vidIQ. You can get started for free with vidIQ using their free plan, but I personally use their Boost plan, which not only comes with more analytics and research keywords, but also helps me increase views on new videos.
Once you've logged in to your vidIQ account, you'll be redirected to your account dashboard. From this dashboard, there are three sections you can access to come up with video ideas: keyword opportunities, top videos from your channel and top search terms for your channel. Let's go over each one.
Under keyword opportunities, you'll find the top keyword opportunities for your YouTube channel. These keywords help viewers find your videos on YouTube.
For each of these top keyword opportunities, vidIQ will provide you with their search volume, which is the average number of times people search for this exact keyword on YouTube each month, competition, which is a measure of how many videos are competing for this keyword in YouTube search results, and overall, which is a measure of how attractive this keyword is to you as a creator.
In my case, the top keyword opportunities for my YouTube channel are beginners guide to webinars, webinar marketing, webinar software, how to do a webinar and create webinar. You can also click on the 'open keyword research' button at the bottom to be redirected to the keywords tab in vidIQ.
In this keywords tab, you'll be able to find an even longer list of top keyword opportunities to do YouTube keyword research, as well as a longer list of top search terms for your channel. If we head back to the vidIQ dashboard, you'll notice that there is this same section with the top search terms driving views to your videos, but with fewer options.
You can sort these top search terms for your channel by views and watch time. In my case, the top search terms for my YouTube channel are wix landing page, webinar, Canva mockup tutorial, how to add hyperlink in PDF, and landing page Wix.
Another place you can come up with video ideas is under the top videos from your channel section in the vidIQ dashboard. Not only will you be able to see the exact video which is performing well in the last 30 days, but also the number of views, views per hour and watch time that it got in that time period.
In my case, the top videos from my YouTube channel in the last 30 days are how to add a hyperlink in a PDF, Canva gradient tutorial, Wix landing page tutorial, what is a webinar and how do webinars work, and Canva animation tutorial.
Another place you can view the top videos from your YouTube channel is directly on YouTube. Head over to your channel, click on 'videos' from the panel up top, and then click on this 'sort by' filter on the right. Sort by 'most popular', and now you'll be able to view the top performing videos of your YouTube channel of all time. Recreating those top performing videos using different keywords is a great way to come up with YouTube video ideas.
To come up with video ideas with low competition, you can also click on your icon on the top, right-hand side, and then on YouTube studio. Click on 'analytics' from the left-hand side panel, and scroll down until you reach this 'your top videos in this period' section.
You can then view the top 10 videos in the past 28 days, and click on the date filter on the top, right-hand side to view your top performing YouTube videos in the past 7 days, 90 days, 365 days, lifetime, or any other filter of your choice.
Yet another place you can come up with video ideas is using vidIQ's daily ideas section. Since I'm a vidIQ boost user, I get 50 YouTube video ideas that I can use, plus their view prediction: very high, high and medium.
For each one, you can dismiss that video idea or save it. Once you have dismissed or saved video ideas, vidIQ will then come up with more topics best suited to your YouTube channel. You can then view those saved or dismissed ideas from the panel up top.
Now if we head back to the keywords tab in vidIQ, you can click on 'export' on the top, right-hand side of the top keyword opportunities and top search terms for your channel to save these lists to your computer for easy access. You can also use the keywords search bar to find other low competition keywords with high traffic based on your high performing videos, keyword opportunities, search terms and daily ideas.
Let's go over an example. Although it's currently February when I'm recording this video, this video will only be published in August, and I'm actually doing YouTube keyword research for the videos that'll be posted in September. All of these 9 Youtube video ideas came about by studying my high performing videos, keyword opportunities, search terms and daily ideas.
These first four videos are based on high performing videos and search terms, and these last five video ideas came from vidIQ's daily ideas section. Let me show you how I use vidIQ's YouTube keyword research's search bar to find low competition keywords with high traffic for this first video.
The first thing I'll search for is for the first long-tail keyword 'Wix downloads' and see what pops up. Under this 'overview' section, you'll be able to see the overall score which will help you gauge how effective this keyword would be in your video optimization efforts. Wix downloads has an overall score of 64, with a search volume of around 1400, which is a medium score, and competition of around 12, which is a very low score.
Under this 'related keywords' section, vidIQ will provide you with keywords that are related to your searched keyword or phrase. Under this 'matching terms' section, vidIQ will provide you with keywords that contain your searched keyword or phrase in any order.
Under this 'questions' section, vidIQ will provide you with question type keywords that contain your keyword or phrase in any order. Lastly, under this 'top trending videos' section, you'll be able to see other videos on YouTube that are trending for the particular keyword that you searched for.
In order to do YouTube keyword research to find low competition keywords with high traffic, I head over to each one of these individual related keywords, matching terms and questions sections, sort the overall score from highest to lowest, select any keyword that is green and is actually related to the video I'm creating, and then paste it in my document where I'm planning that video under a tags section.
I add as the first few tags the YouTube channel's title, in this case, Wix downloads and adding downloadable documents on Wix, and also always add my YouTube channel name, Yes To Tech, as the last tag.
I then check to see the number of characters that entire selection has. Although you can add up to 500 characters to your YouTube tags, those characters include commas, so you can actually add around 490 characters, give or take. Once my YouTube tags section is done and filled with low competition keywords, I start the scripting process, which is what we'll be covering in my next video, so stay tuned for that.
