Wondering how to create a table in Canva? In this Canva tutorial, you’ll learn how to add a table into a Canva template quickly and easily.
By the end of this video, you’ll know exactly how to customize a free Canva table template to make a fillable Canva table that you can easily add columns and rows to. If you're excited about this video, make sure you like this video, subscribe for easy tutorials on how to stand out online, and hit the bell to be notified every time I post a new video, and with that said let's jump right in.
First off, if you don’t have a Canva account yet, just click on the link in the description box below to sign up for free. There are two ways that you can create a table in Canva: by designing a table freehand or by using one of Canva’s pre-made templates.
To create a table in Canva by designing a table freehand, once you’ve logged in to your Canva account, use the search bar, or the suggested designs on your Canva homepage, to locate the design type which you’d like to add a table to, such as an Instagram post. Once that option populates, click on it.
Now click on ‘elements’ from the left-hand side panel, scroll down until you reach the ‘lines and shapes’ section, and click on the square. Resize and reposition it so that it’s the size of the first cell you’d like to add in your table.
Let’s say I want to add three columns to my table, with two cells that are the same size, and with a third one that’s slightly longer. To create a second cell that’s the same size as this first one, click on it and then on ‘duplicate’ from the white panel up top. Reposition it so that it’s aligned and next to the first cell you added to the table.
Let’s follow the same process to duplicate this second cell now, reposition it so that it’s aligned and next to the second cell you added to the table, and drag it to the right so that it’s slightly longer in length.
To ensure that the spacing between these three cells that we added to the first row of the table is the same, select them all, click on ‘position’ from the white panel up top, and then on ‘tidy up’. Reposition the selected cells so that they’re centralized on your Canva design, and click on ‘group’ from the white panel up top to transform them into a single unit.
To add a second row to this table, all you have to do is duplicate these cells we already added by clicking on ‘duplicate’ from the white panel up top, and repeat the same process until you’ve added all of the rows you need to your table. To ensure that the spacing between these rows of the table we created in Canva is the same, select them all, click on ‘position’ from the white panel up top, and then on ‘tidy up’.
To further customize this table, you can click on any of the cells and then on the color picker from the white panel up top to change its color. You can make the first row one color, and then alternate the color of the second, third, fourth, and fifth rows.
You can also click on ‘text’ from the panel on the left, and then on ‘add a heading’ to type in and then add text to any of the cells of your table. You can change the font, font size and text color from the options on the white panel up top, reposition the text box, and repeat the same process until you’ve added text to all the appropriate cells of your table.
As always, you can add other elements to this table design, including lines, shapes, graphics, photos, videos, audios, charts, frames, grids and more, to take it to the next level, or even click on ‘templates’ from the left-hand side panel to add a table to one of Canva’s pre-designed templates. For more details on how to customize a design in Canva, make sure to watch my video on ‘how to use Canva’. I’ll leave the link to it in the description box below.
Once you’re done adding a table to your Canva design, and customizing it to look the way you want, rename your design up top, and then click on the ‘download’ button. Make sure that the file type is set to either JPG or PNG, and if you want this white background to be transparent, go with PNG and then click on the ‘transparent background’ checkbox, which is a feature exclusive to Canva Pro users, but which you can try out for free by clicking on the link in the description box below, and then click on ‘download’ again to save the table you created in Canva to your computer.
To create a table in Canva by using one of Canva’s pre-made templates, head back to Canva’s homepage, and use the search bar to search for ‘table’. If one of these table templates suits your needs, click on it to edit it. If not, search for ‘calendar’ instead, and use one of these calendar templates as a starting point. Once you’ve found a template that you wish to customize, click on it to edit it.
Let’s first remove all of these additional calendar pages so that we’re left with just one page with a table that we can customize. To do so, hover over the additional pages, and click on the trash can on the top, right-hand side.
Just like with any regular Canva design, you can click on any of the elements within the template to customize them, such as the background, text and table, or you can click on ‘templates’ from the left-hand side panel to start fresh with another design.
As you can see, this table is a single grid with cells that are the same size. It also has a transparent background, meaning that if you change the background color of your Canva design, the table’s background will also change.
Feel free to delete the month name and dates of the week so that you’re left with just the table. You can even make it smaller and duplicate it by clicking on ‘duplicate’ from the white panel up top to increase the number of rows and columns that this table has.
Just as before, you can click on ‘text’ from the panel on the left, and then on ‘add a heading’ to type in and then add text to any of the cells of your table. You can change the font, font size and text color from the options on the white panel up top, reposition the text box, and repeat the same process until you’ve added text to all the appropriate cells of your table.
You can also add other elements to this table design, including lines, shapes, graphics, photos, videos, audios, charts, frames, grids and more, to take it to the next level. As I mentioned, if this table design isn’t what you were looking for and you wish to customize another template instead, click on ‘add page’ from the top, right-hand side of your design, click on ‘templates’ from the left-hand side panel, and then select another one of Canva’s templates from the available options.
Feel free to delete unnecessary bits that have been added to the template, such as the month and image. This particular template is made up of single cells that are grouped together, which means that you can ungroup them to make this table look the way you wish. You can make cells longer or shorter, or even delete rows or columns of this table.
Just as before, you can click on any of the cells and then on the color picker from the white panel up top to change its color, click on ‘text’ from the panel on the left, and then on ‘add a heading’ to type in and then add text to any of the cells of your table, or even add any additional elements to your table design from the options on the left-hand side panel.
Once you’re done customizing your table to look the way you want, rename your Canva design up top, and then click on the ‘download’ button. Make sure that the file type is set to either JPG or PNG, and then click on ‘download’ again to save the table you created in Canva to your computer.
