Why Your Website's Homepage Needs A Tagline

Today we're talking about your homepage and how to make it convert like crazy. There is one main thing that it is probably missing that will give it a boost.

Today we're talking about your homepage and how to make it convert like crazy. There is one main thing that it is probably missing that will increase your sales, e-mail subscribers and expert status.

When visitors land on your homepage for the first time, what is the first thing that they see? An image, an e-mail opt-in, who you are?

In reality, the #1 thing that your homepage should do when a person visits it for the first time is answer two very important questions:

  1. What is your business about?

  2. Who is your ideal audience?

This can be summarized as your tagline. Your visitors should not have to click on your about page to know what you do.

For instance, when you visit the Yes To Tech homepage, the first thing that comes up is a banner image with the following text:

"Hey entrepreneurs and small business owners! Stop procrastinating. Create your own website from scratch - no tech knowledge required."

I didn’t add that right at the top just for fun. It was purposefully thought out so that my site’s visitors know whether or not they are in the right place right from the bat. You can clearly tell that in the first 5 seconds of someone visiting my homepage they know what my business is about - creating a website from scratch with no prior technical knowledge - and who my ideal audience is - entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Your tagline doesn’t need to be complicated. It should actually be a short, easy-to-understand sentence that quickly and clearly portrays what you do and who you serve.
